A challenge to all you educated folk

Cbelle

Cathlete
I'm currently training for a marathon...I've selected a very long training plan...basically a mileage buildup for 5 months followed by the actually 4 month marathon training. It consists of 4 days of running (each day no less than 3 miles and of course building up from there over the weeks) and at about the 5 week mark, changing to 5 days of running.

Now my challenge to you. I am having fits trying to figure out how to fit my weights and/or cross training (using Cathe videos of course) into the plan. And I havent even received my HardCore videos yet! If the overall goal is to a) complete a marathon and b) lose weight, what rotation would you recommend? Keep in mind I have all the videos and Hard Core is on its way sometime in the future. In a perfect world, I'd love to have someone come up with a plan that would cover the whole 9 months but I'll take one month for now since that's probably asking too much. can't wait to see what you guys come up wiht!

Oh it occurs to me you should see what I'm currently doing:

M- SJP
T- SS/run
W- KPC
TH- L&G/run
F- OFF
S- PP/run
S- run

I prefer 6 days of workouts. TIA!

Wow....this is a challenge! Since 1997 I have run 11 marathons and have also used Cathe beside free weights for me. I never really had done a rotation with just Cathe's workouts. I recently did a P90X rotation and lost 21 lbs, but I also drastically changed my diet! Went Vegan..:)

I will say that both the Imaxes as being interval training will benefit your running. You might want to substitute Imax1 or Imax2 sometimes for KPC. You can also do intervals 1-5 or 5-10 before a shorter run, as it would warm up your legs well. If you aren't interested in working any body part in particular your rotation looks good. During my training I normally did upper body and lower body 3 times a week, but on different days, but I have always had a lower body problem (Pear shape). Since using P90X though and now as I am currently marathon training I only work legs 2 times a week and they have finally gotten smaller!

Sorry I couldn't give you a particular rotation...:(...but there are other runners here. If you have any running questions I'd be happy to help...:)...Carole

Carole,

When you did the P90X rotation did you run also? If so, how many miles a week and how did you put it in the rotation?

Good job on the 21 pounds!!!!

Have a great day!

I don`t run usually but I recommend to you IMAX 1, 2 and MIC.I have seen lot of improvements in my cardio capacity using these workouts.Hope this helps.

Carole, I also would like to see what your rotation was like with the P90X since maybe I could sub Hard Core into that. Also, what vids did you use for upper and lower body work?

Ugh, I was REALLY hoping no one would bring up IMAX. I must be the only one here who doesn't like these videos. Not so much the video and workout, I just HATE how hard they are! But they won't get easier NOT doing them I suppose.

So I"ve got an IMAX once a week at least so far. I can do weights on one or two of my running days since they are generally low mileage even later into the trianing.

BTW, Carole, what training plan are you following and which marathon are you doing or have done?

I'm also wondering if I should stick to just all weights or circuits on my non-running days. I'm thinking that mayeb I'm overdoing things. I know I should cross train and I know I should lift weights. I'm just not sure how to accomplish all of this without overtraining. Plus I work full time and have two kids so this is really beginning to be a challenge.

Hi Tia,

Here is how I trained for my last marathon:

M PUB/run
T Spinning
W PLB/run
Tj Spinnig
F ME
S run half of my Sunday long run
Su long run

The following week I change it to:

M PLB/run
T Spinning
W ME/run
Th Spinning
F PUB
S Long run
Su run half of the long run.

This combination worked great for me. I do Spinning instead of speed work.

Beverly, I ran 3 times a week with P90X so it was more like the Doubles rotation. I know alot of my weight loss had to do with the clean eating!

Cbelle..I started following a training program from www.runnersworld.com had a few minor injuries so I didn't get my weekly mileage up as far as the program said too. I have always been good about at least getting in my long runs for marathon training (at least 3 20 mile run's spaced out in the training). I am doing a marathon in Redding CA that I have done twice before. Some others I have done are Tahoe, Napa (twice), Humboldt (twice), Big Sur, Cal International in Sac, Ave of the Giants, and San Jose (my least favorite!).

If you don't like Imax then just do a couple of intervals at a time.I do that with P90X Plyometrics to help strength in my legs. Seriously it'll really help you! These workouts would kinda be a replacement for speedwork if you are leary of that. Like Josie, she does spinning instead of speedwork and she just did a marathon in orange County last sunday!!!!

I'll give you the 1st P90X rotation that I did along with running 3 days a week...its long:

Weeks 1,2,3
M:Chest & Back, Ab Ripperx
T:plyometrics, Cathe lower body
W:Shoulders & Arms, Ab Ripperx, run
T:YogaX
F:Legs & Back, Ab Ripperx, run
S:KenpoX
S:long run

Weeks 4,8,13 (recovery week)
M:YogaX
T:Core Synergistics, run
W:KenpoX
T:X Stretch, run
F:Core Synergistics
S:YogaX
S:long run

Weeks 5,6,7
M:CardioX, Chest, Shoulders, & Triceps, AbRipperX
T:plyometrics, Cathe Lower body
W:run, Back & Biceps, AbRipperX
T:YogaX
F:run, Legs & Back, AbRipperX
S:KenpoX
S:long run

Weeks 9, 11
M:CardioX, Chest & Back, AbRipperX
T:CardioX, Plyometrics, Cathe lower body
W:run, Shoulders & Arms, AbRipperX
T:YogaX
F:run, Legs & Back
S:KenpoX
S:long run

Weeks 10, 12
M:CardioX, Chest, Shoulders & Triceps, AbRipperX
T:Cardiox, Plyometrics, Cathe lower body
W:run, Back & Biceps, ABRipperX
T:YogaX
F:run, Legs & Back, AbRipperX
S:KenpoX
S:longrun
W:KenpoX

Weeks 9,10,11 and 12 do take alot of time. Sometimes also during my P90X rotation I added another day of shoulders, triceps and biceps. This is also the Doubles rotation using more cardio than the Classic rotation so that could be cut out....hope this helps....:)...Carole

So did you only run 3x a week thru out all of your marathon training? The least amount of days I've ever seen are 4 days. and I'm just hoping to finish, I don't care much about how long it takes me so I'm avoiding speedwork like the plague right now. Maybe next time. Thanks for that rotation! I can't wait to get HardCore but I have no idea how I'm going to fit it all in! I'm training for Chicago although I'd like to do Flying Pig in May too.

No, when I did my 1st P90X rotation I was not marathon training. So it was just 3 days a week of running then. I run 4-6 days a week when marathon training, but I think Josie only runs 4 days a week. I did NOT do an speedwork for my 1st marathon either as I didn't care about the time. I do remember for my 1st marathon I ran 32,36 and 40 mile weeks during training. I am very excited about Hardcore myself....and I have akways wanted to do the Flying Pig marathon!! My favorite phrase has always been "When Pig's Fly"....a bit sarcastic I might add....;) ...Carole
