Go Meatless! Eggland’s Best Certified by American Vegetarian Association

hard-boiled-eggs-ssCelebrities like Oprah Winfrey advocate it, along with star chefs Mario Batali and Wolfgang Puck. Whether you are inspired to try a meatless meal on Monday, or any day of the week, going vegetarian is among the hottest food trends. According to the Vegetarian Resource Group, between 30 and 50 percent of adults in the United States now eat two to three meatless meals per week, and at least 10 percent of adults consider themselves vegetarians. Moreover, eating less meat can reduce your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.

The recently released 2010 Dietary Guidelines advocate eating fewer calories overall, and to replace protein foods that are higher in saturated (solid) fats, such as red meat, with choices that are lower in solid fats and calories, with the balance of the plate being made up of fruits and vegetables.
“Eggland’s Best (EB) eggs contain an excellent source of protein, and calorie for calorie, give you the biggest nutritional bang for your buck. With only 70 calories, each Eggland’s Best egg contains double the vitamin D and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids of ordinary eggs, along with three times more vitamin B12 and 10 times more vitamin E. Moreover, EB eggs are also a good source of iodine, selenium, riboflavin, folate and have 25% less saturated fat compared to an ordinary egg, which is why I include them in my diet every day.” says Elizabeth Ward, MS, RD, a nationally-recognized dietitian.

What consumers may not realize is that the majority of egg producers use animal fat and/or animal protein in the feed that goes in the hens’ diet. In contrast, Eggland’s Best hen feed is an all-natural, vegetarian feed containing healthy grains, canola oil and BioteneTM, a unique and all-natural feed supplement which includes rice bran, alfalfa meal, kelp and Vitamin E. Eggland’s Best hen feed contains absolutely no added hormones, antibiotics or steroids of any kind and is free of any animal fat, animal byproducts, recycled or processed foods. It is the quality of the feed that has made Eggland’s Best (EB) the No. 1 branded egg in the U.S, offering superior nutrition, taste and quality in comparison to ordinary eggs.

It is because of Eggland’s Best all-natural, vegetarian feed that the American Vegetarian Association (AVA) has certified EB eggs as part of their widely recognized certification program, which enables vegetarian-minded people to make accurate food choices. The AVA certification program helps consumers be confident in their selection, and that it meets the goodness, quality, wholesomeness, and manufacturing practices in strict adherence to the standards of AVA vegetarian guidelines.
