Pentagenarians & Beyond: WB 3/17

Good morning,

I just got back from babysitting.

Valerie, Thanks for the info on WW. I am still toying around with joining. I need some structure to follow. Funny, all our HD stores are pretty much stand alone buildings. They are surrounded by chain food restaurants. Did the thumb issue originate with bike riding? The joint at the base of my left hand thumb is really large, and basically useless. I cannot grip anything seriously with that hand. It usually drops. This has been like this since I was a kid. Not sure what caused it. There is no pain or anything like that, just the large knuckle bone and no use for the thumb.

Carolyn, good job on the original Pyramid Lower Body. Which do you think is harder? that one or Lite?

Diane Sue, one thing I don't like about using baby spinach in salad is the step parts, like you mentioned...have to pick them all off before adding. I really like spinach a lot, but that stem removal makes me pick up romaine more frequently. That eye exam does sound very thorough!

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Take care,

This morning I did Pyramid Upper Body. My time was 70 minutes with 353 calories burned. My average heart rate was 116 and maximum heart rate was 158.

Deb, I think that the original Pyramid Upper and Lower are harder than the LiTE Pyramid Pump workouts. Of course you can make Pyramid Pump harder by choosing heavier weights. I don’t remove the stems from baby spinach since there is so much nutrition in the stems. If the spinach leaves are larger I might remove some of the stems. Kale, on the other hand, has large tough stems that you need to remove whether your eating it cooked or raw.

Diane Sue, I thought my calorie burn should have been higher yesterday too. Pyramid Lower Body does have that segment of floor work with the stability ball which might keep the calorie burn lower.

Valerie, I hope the injection helps your thumb. It’s good that you have learned to work around the issues to continue doing what you enjoy.

Hello to Lori and Judy.

Deb there are different WW programs.... the online only. the one where you attend meetings. and another more supervised program. the meetings here were not convenient location or time but I wanted online only anyway. the online is the least expensive. depending on whether you hit a promotion. when I signed up it was $30 for the first 3 months. that was around thanksgiving. after, it was $19.95 a month. I just got an extra month free. they try to retain members. it takes a while to get used to tracking and to get foods you use often set so its easier to track.

the HD stands alone, but usually in a strip mall that always has a mcdonalds etc fast food place where you could run over for a fast lunch in half an hour.

I eat the stems on baby spinach. the bigger leaves I clip off the stems. using a kitchen shears is fast and easy than a knife. kale usually needs stems removed, at least the fatter lower parts. I never got enthused about kale salads, prefer it slightly cooked.

the thumb joint is a common spot to get arthritis. its funny, my right hand joint is enlarged but works fine, the left is not enlarged but doesn't work well. my mothers family all had hand, foot arthritis. nobody needed knees or hips. they have all been gone a long time.... before replacement surgery was common. I always think when I see people texting madly with their thumbs, they will wear out that joint a lot faster than other generations. where I am bothered most is the pinch type lids on meds or detergents etc. I have decent grip strength otherwise.

Today I did Lite Cardio Party no stretch, 35 minutes, heart rate average 145, max 171, met 8.0, 234 calories, 3,588 steps, followed by Lite Rev'd Up Rumble Calorie crush 9 minutes, heart rate average 138, max 161, met 9.30, 82 calories, 990 steps. I then did Coffey Fit Raw Core moves, 24 minutes, met 4.0, 106 calories, heart rate average 98, max 124, 237 steps, finishing with 21 Day Fix Extreme yoga 30 minutes, heart rate average 94, max 115,115 steps, met 3, 80 calories, 4,930 steps. My husband is off today and we are going out to dinner at a favorite Italian restaurant this evening to celebrate our anniversary that is next week.

Good morning.

No workout yesterday.

Carolyn, I didn;t realize that there was more nutrition in the stems of the baby spinach. I guess for me they are just annoying to eat. I will remember that though from now on. I agree that the original Pyramids are harder, especially with Cathe going "warp speet" on the upper one. Also, I don't do the floor work from the lower on the original, always did the premix that eliminated it.

Valerie, it sounds like to do the WW online in the beginning, you have to enter your foods and start a database, similar to MFP. I have an extensive one on MFP, I should use it!

Diane Sue, Happy Anniversary ( early!)...hope your dinner was nice. Let us know what you had. We are going to a play tonight, and to our favorite Italian restaurant afterwards. No calorie counting for me there. I love the food too much, and at this one, there is not really anything considered "healthy" that I have seen.

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Take care,

Deb WW lets you enter anything. I have the same thing for breakfast. Greek Yogurt, fruit, almonds, skim milk, coffee so instead of entering each item, I created “normal breakfast” so I click on one thing rather than each item.
there is a bit of a money motivator. I feel like if I am paying for something, I am obligated to use it, so I do. free things ( as you see) can get ignored because they don't seem as valuable.

I can enter any recipe. Program calculates points from either nutritional values or ingredients. If you give it a name and save it, it will stay in memory. I can scan a UPC code of a new product and it will track it or keep it in the data base. WW has an extensive base of grocery and restaurant menu items already. There is an activity feature with many choices so I can look up mountain biking , enter time and intensity.point value is added and resets every week. No ads. Connect is a facebook like feature for members only.

Overall it is a nice program, pretty easy to use Some people find everything they need already in the data base. I cook a lot so I use nutritional values to add new things. adding recipes starting with ingredients is tedious, but if its something you will use often, probably worth it. other times you might find something similar already in the database and use it instead. there are things I ended years ago that still come up for me, but points are calculated differently now so I should redo them.

ETA Diane sue happy annversary.

I slept in this morning. No workout done yet. I was hoping Kelly would get up the metabolic workout she mentioned for this weekend , but don't see it yet.

Deb, I am watching grandchildren two evenings this next week. I have never removed the stems from spinach. My daughter bought a huge salad over last weekend and the spinach was all torn in small pieces. I am not sure I liked it that way, although sometimes I don't care for larger pieces with longer stems which I do not remember being there years ago. I just remove the kale from the larger stem pieces.
I tried to be healthy at the restaurant last night. I had the salmon, which is always so delicious, as is the mixed roasted veggies that have a wine marinade. But, I still ate some of the bread that they bake daily and mozzarella sticks. Then our friend gave us a large piece of Italian cream cake for our anniversary. We got to visit with her for awhile. Her husband was not there though, he was working at their other restaurant. They are not there as much anymore. They travel to other states for their other businesses and have multiple offices.

Carolyn, I used to use the ball ab work and floor work off of the Pyramid workouts as add on all of the time. Cathe does move faster in a lot of the older workouts. For some reason push pull just came to mind as one that moves fast and seemed pretty intense. Those pike shoulder push ups off of the high step, and repeating 3 times. Ab work and floor work does tend to take down the met value and heart rate. I noticed that when checking out differences in premixes and met values.

Valerie, it is so much more work tracking macros and calories in meals when we cook from scratch. I have an extensive database in MFP that I have added to my recipes. I hate doing the work for something I doubt I will make often.

Today I did a premix from Kick, Punch, and Crunch that was intermediate intensity drills, combos 1 and 2, and abs. My time was 44 minutes with 305 calories burned. Average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 171. The stability ball abs segment on this workout is one of my favorites. I went out to do some shopping and pick up some food items which turned out to be a frustrating experience. Every where that I went was so crowded that I didn’t get as much accomplished as I had hoped.

Deb, you don’t have to build your food database in WW to use it. Tracking is very quick and easy to do. Your most recent foods will appear in a list at the bottom once you select a meal to track. It tracks smart points instead of calories since that isn’t a part of the program. It’s so easy to pick up my phone or iPad and track my food.

Diane Sue, your anniversary dinner sounds wonderful. Do your friends own the restaurant? I don’t enter recipes for dishes that I only make occasionally either unless it’s something that has more high fat or calorie laden ingredients. The database is so large that I just look for a similar recipe.

Valerie, most of my recipes converted to the smart points automatically. You might be able to edit your older recipes to recalculate the points.

Hello to Lori and Judy.

This morning I did Coffey Fit Raw Intervals #3, 27 minutes, met 7.6, 202 calories, heart rate average 132, max 166, 2,018 steps. That one always packs a real lot of intensity in a short time. I then did Lite Metabolic Blast, 44 minutes, heart rate 120 average, 161 max, 1,297 steps, met 7.9, 311 calories. Total time was 71 minutes, 513 calories, 3,315 steps.
RAW INTERVALS #3 I used 5,8,10,12,15 # dbs for this one. It alternates a cardio, high rep fast low weight, followed by heavy weight same body part. Uses a step for some of the cardio. All moves are standing except final.
Step followed by 8# biceps curls then 15# biceps curls (this was a bit much for the low weight)
ski runs and jacks followed by bent arm lateral raises 5# followed by 12# heavy weight
step single leg knee pulls followed by 8# triceps kickbacks alternating run, then 15# kickbacks alternating
step scissors/ pop squats followed by pec deck pulses 5# then 12# pec deck
step lateral leg lifts with arm movements followed by running rows 8# dbs then 15# dbs alternating rows
waist line sided to side bends followed by seated on step knee pulls
Metabolic Blast
curl press with lunge/side lunge abduction 8# dbs
one arm snatch 10# db
4 jabs up/4 jabs across/4 leg abductions/squat 5# dbs
forward leaning rear delt fly with curl press 10# dbs
squat lunge/squat press 10# dbs
8 pass under lunges/traveling lunges 10# db
squat with 2 small jumps/lunge kick lunge stand 10# dbs
cross back lunge with lateral raise/front raise/upright row 8# dbs
3 squat press/1 goal post press/ 2 singles 8# dbs
rear lunge torso twist 8# dbs
alternating biceps curls with leg extension 10# dbs

side plank with front angle rear delt raise 5# db
weighted sit ups 10# dbs
chest fly with glute squeeze 10# dbs
press and pull over 10# dbs
swimmers no weight

I have made a tentative schedule for next weeks weight work. I looked at youtube and put some of the therapy work in my watch later list. Thanks for the anniversary wishes. It will be 46 years on Wednesday :)Thunderstorms off and on today. I made it out for errands between :)

Carolyn, I have never checked out weight watchers. I have the My Net Diary App and it has a lot of my foods and workouts stored in it. I have not been using it lately though as logging in two apps is a bit time consuming. When I enter a recipe in MFP I pull the macros and info and add it to My Net Diary rather than having to figure it all out. I need to go through MFP recipes and delete some of the recipes that I do not remake. I do hate those crowded shopping trips when I want just a few things.
Our friends own the restaurants, a shopping cart business, and some other things. She said they have been invited to open a restaurant in one of the Vegas Casinos. She says they are not sure they want to take that on though. I think it was Bon Appetit that they were supposed to be in soon. Years ago they had a restaurant in one of the hotels here and they had the best steaks. They have an award winning coconut cream pie that they make. It is awesome. My daughter tried to get a whole pie to take home once and they will only sell in the restaurant by the slice.
