Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 4/7

I have what looks a bit like a bunion on my left foot, but it's not. the toe is not angled , it is straight, but there is no joint there anymore. I can have the bone shaved down ( sounds like great fun!) but I would be in a "boot" for weeks. since it's not uncomfortable, I haven't done it. that foot needs a little more room. I have been able to work around with shoe styles for years so I know not to assume that one years version of a shoe will be the same next year. my workout shoes are the only things where I got a wide because they often have a tapered toe box. Saucony shoes used to be wider in the toe box but suddenly they weren't, so I ended up with Brooks. I use stores where I can try on shoes because the right foot is normal while the left has the bump. I buy shoes to accommodate the bump, and usually it will work for the right foot without excess room. For me, if I am aware of the arch support all the time, its probably too big and I would size down.

never got out to do shopping yesterday. had to deal with '"stuff" for my sister after not talking to her for a few weeks. spent half the day shopping for her. it is incredibly hard to get anything done without internet and email. when you use it all the time, its hard to imagine life without access. If I thought she would use it, I would buy her a desktop in a heartbeat. I cant teach her how to use it over the telephone and her kids are MIA. she desnt have any friends and cant drive to get to a class.

I tweaked my neck somehow yesterday. probably trying to use thru stacked upper body. a couple of advil discomfort that is better already today.

Today I did WS3 Cardio Step Jam. It was 32 minutes and 238 calories burned. My average heart rate was 130 and maximum heart rate was 153.

Deb, I hope PT goes well today. I agree that it’s time to get more information about the knee pain. The running shoes are probably a good choice for agility training if you can get a good fit. I find that cross trainers are best for most of my dvd workouts so I always have two different types of workout shoes.

Valerie, you are so right that shoes keep changing. I have been looking for a new pair of cross trainers, but I haven’t found anything that I like. I have worn ASICS for several years, but they have changed and I haven’t been happy with the current ones that I have. I hope your neck feels better.

Diane Sue, I applaud you for doing the Yvette Bachman workout. I have looked at some of her workouts and I know that they are not for me.

Hello to Lori and Judy. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Today I did Kelly Coffey Amped Up Cardio Both combined, 57 minutes, 389 calories, met 8.0, 4,988 steps, heart rate average 139, max 167. I then did Rev'd Up Rumble Calorie Crush (rebounder for some of the impact) 9 minutes, met 9.0 (I lowered the met .3) 81 calories, 946 steps, heart rate 127 average, max 150. I finished with Cathe's Yoga Max time saver #1, 33 minutes, 80 calories, met 3.0, 28 steps, heart rate 86 average, 118 max. Total time was 99 minutes, 550 calories, 5,962 steps.

Valerie, I have a bone spur in my foot and the doctor said if I was still able to exercise and it was not really bothering me she would not recommend going to a specialist and getting it shaved off. So, far it has been quite a few years and I have not had any real problems that would make me want to do that. Things like balancing on toes in yoga, that barre, chair work on toes, and a lot of calf raises will set off my forefoot to hurting for awhile.

Carolyn, I doubt that I will being another Yvette Bachman workout. At least that is how I feel now. I did one a long time ago that was bosu and weights and the impact was crazy and I thought I would never give her another try.

My foot used to get sore from some yoga positions, going back and forth on toes. since I don't do much yoga anymore, it is better, and the bone spur is less prominent. not gone, but less. I used to have bumps on my heels but those totally went away. probably won't be that lucky.

I have worked thru a range of shoe brands over the years. I stick with one brand until they change it and it doesn't fit anymore, and then I go shopping again. there aren't as many places to try shoes as there used to be. I got these Brooks shoes at REI. I bought one pair at a actual store, and ordered a second pair for the other house after I'd used the first ones for a while. I'm not that picky. flexible shoe without any hot spots. I used to use Road runner sports because they used to have a lot of info on fitting shoes, with the pronation, neutral shoes etc. they had info about cushion shoes and motion control shoes. I cant wear a motion control shoe so it was a nice way to narrow the choices. I have one pair of those motion control shoes. I use them for road bike riding because they have laces that are contained. I don't know what that feature is called. getting laces caught in your bike chain can be a massive problem. the shoes are so stiff I can barely walk but they work great on a bike since I cant wear clip on pedals.
I did Reved up rumble again and part of an ab workout. my neck didn't like that so I backed off. its much better than this morning but I decided against weights. .

Deb I'm surprised they haven't done at least xrays to see if there is a reason behind the discomfort. or an MRI. this has been a long time without an actual injury to be dealing with this.

Good evening all!

Thought I posted on Sunday, but do not see it. Weird. Been doing good with workouts, plus walking GiGi. Today was actually day 23 of the SB rotation I have been doing. It is only 28 days so this went by very quick for me. Yesterday was my rest day Chelsie was not able to come over due to school work overload. She has been very stressed. She graduates late this year and I am sure it can’t come quick enough for her. Today, was an SB Upper Body and Core workout that I followed up with a JumpSport Interval (with Bands) workout I made when I first started bouncing. It was fun.

Valerie....yeah on the moose!!!! They are beautiful and huge!!! Great you can read in a car. I get terrible motion sickness when I try to read. On long rides I need to be in front seat too, back seat makes me nauseous. Hoping your neck is better this evening.

Judy...I know exactly what you mean about working and not feel like you are resting! That is the main reason I workout in the morning. If waited until I got home, I would never do it. So tired after my workday of running around.

Deb...hoping the shoes help you. That is great on their return policy. Hopefully, you won’t need to utilize it. Kelly does have some great Raw workouts. I just never got to them as often as I should have.

Diane Sue...I have only done a couple of Yvette’s workouts. One of her kickboxing and a metabolic. I think she always wears weighted gloves. She moves really fast with weights and I usually go slower to avoid an injury. I remember not really liking her workouts. There was no fun factor for me. A bone spur sounds terrible. Great it is not bothering you. I have a small bunion on my right foot that I need to be mindful of when buying shoes/sneakers. I have a shoe stretcher with a bunion attachment that is amazing. It was my grandmother’s and quite old. It does the trick though!

Carolyn...I used to always buy cross trainers too. But like you said they have changed. Stopped buying them because there was absolutely nothing I liked. Lately, I have been liking Nike for my workouts. They seem to work well for weights, then bouncing.

Have a great night all!!!

Good morning,

PT yesterday, and agility class last night. My knee/hip were bothering me a lot last night. I had to take ibuprofen to be able to get comfortable to sleep.

Diane Sue, did you get the Superfeet from Amazon? There were so many to choose from, it was hard to tell which would benefit me. I played around with how to lace the shoes a bit and seem to have solved the heel slipping problem.

Valerie, glad you neck is better. I definitely have bunions on both feet, which is why they recommended a wide width. Too bad your sister does not have anyone local to assist her, it's really great that you help her. It has to be difficult from a distance. I did have original hip/back x-rays, but since the knee started, have not gone back to my PCP.

Carolyn, Are you doing the April rotation? I used to wear ASICS for years too, but found the style I liked was different too with the last pair I bought. I did mention possibly time to get an x-ray of my knee, but did not get much of a response. very strange. I may just go to an orthopedic guy that my friend goes to for her knee on my own. I know that if I call my PCP, he will want to see me, have x-rays done there, then refer to someone in their group. They tend to want to keep everything "in-house" and get miffed when you go to someone that is not part of their group.

Lori, nice job on the rotation! What is Chelsie majoring in? A shoe stretched with a bunion attachment would be so useful!! I wonder if they still make them. Yes, with the days you have at work, it would be pretty tough having to face a workout when getting home.

Hi to Judy,

Take care,

Today I did 10 Pound Slimdown Xtreme Lower Body Circuit again. My time was 47 minutes with 255 calories burned. Average heart rate was 119 and maximum heart rate was 160. After that I did JS’ Total Stretch from her new Total Stretch dvd. That was 17 minutes and 32 calories burned.

Deb, it must be disappointing to continue to have the knee and hip pain after all this time. I’m doing the rotation that came with the 10 Pound Slimdown Xtreme series. I am on week two, but I might do something else next week. Cathe’s April rotation didn’t appeal to me for some reason.

Valerie, nice job with Rev’d Up Rumble. I sometimes get neck discomfort when I do Cathe’s ab workouts. Maybe that’s what happened to you.

Lori, it’s great that you have been keeping up with the SB rotation.

Diane Sue, great workout with Amped Up Cardio, Rev’d Up Rumble Calorie Crush, and Yoga Max timesaver.

Hello to Judy.

Lori I used to get motion sick driving all the time. I still can if I'm in the back seat. reading works OK especially if sentences are short left to right, like a newspaper column or phone. books don't work as well. I have to use something to stay on one line. I read for much of the 12 hour drive. I save up good articles to read to DH on paper or on my phone. the NYT always has interesting things so I bookmark them. the smaller screen on the phone works better for me than a wider one on an ipad. I look up and around quite often so I know where we are, and see some scenery. the interstate is not all that exciting though. Moose are so much fun to see. we have been very close to them by accident. sometimes they just stand there and blend into the trees and you don't notice them until you are past.

Deb that's a good plan. I use an orthopod in different group than my primary. I use the group where I had knee surgery 15 yrs ago. I need to get a referral from my primary to see them or else it might not be covered by insurance. just a thought. depends on how your policy is written. my primary is fine with the people I see, but I still need the referral or visit might not be covered. my cardiologist is not in the same group either. my primary happens to be in a group with a lot of "specialist" turnover.

its so funny about shoes. I can wear the same pair of shoes for years and they look brand new. my DH wears shoes for a week and they look like they're 10 years old. If I have a pair of shoes that is a little too snug across the left toe joint, I fill with water and wear damp. this stretches enough for me. the bump on my left foot can get rubbed and irritated, but if I get "wide" shoes, they are too sloppy on my rt foot. a choice of which foot I want blisters on! don't do this if you think you want to return the shoes! I do not need much extra room and most regular width shoes are fine.
Carolyn I can get neck strain from overhead presses if I go too heavy or rush the workout. I was in a hurry the night before. definitely feel it when I did ab work , so I did a partial ab workout and supported my head thruout. today its OK again.

My workout is done. Coffey Fit Raw Athletic Training #1, 28 minutes, heart rate 135 average, 165 max, 169 calories, 1,936 steps. I then did Lite Strong Body Stacked Sets Lower Body , 41 minutes, 212 calories, met 6.0, 1,065 steps, heart rate average 109, max 145. I wanted a bit more cardio so did Lite Cardio Party Calorie crush on the step, 16 minutes, met 9.0, 116 calories, heart rate average 157, max 188, 1,520 steps. Finished with Lite extended stretch #1 , 13 minutes, 35 calories, met 3.0, 20 steps. Total time was 98 minutes, 532 calories, 4,541 steps.

I need to run out and clean up leaves and seedlings. All of the high winds yesterday left me a whole new bunch that ends up blowing in the door when I open it. Also need to run to sprouts for some fresh veggies. I went to use my broccoli and it had started turning yellow, so I pulled out a bag of frozen cauliflower and you can tell I don't use frozen often as it was dated for use by 2017. It was yellow in the bag. so, last night I just drank some Amazing grass with my salmon so I could get in some veggies. I had a bottle of Evolution thriving

I am not sure that I like Stacked sets lower body all that much. I pushed myself to do it again, thinking I might like it better as I may have already been sore or tired the other time that I did it. I am wondering about the Stacked sets Upper, if I will like it. I am inclined to want the body weight and bands because it has another calorie crush on it and the premixes would make nice add ons.
I got out to the store and still need to get outside. Gertie got all excited when I got the trash out to take out, then I did not go out yet. She is waiting. She thinks that she needs to go out with me everytime I run out the door. She is like my shadow. She kept trying to lay right in the middle of my work space through the weight work this morning.

I am dealing with Ancient Nutrition through Amazon. My Multi Collagen Joint + Tissue had a couple of wood slivers down in it. I did not give a review or anything like that. They have always been good about their things and the products have been fine. I thought it odd that they were in there and as to why? Anyway, I got it the 5th and had been using it. It was after I dug down further that I found them. I searched through it after the first piece and found one more. It has black on it like it was dirty or something. I sent them pictures and they wanted the product batch number off of the bottom of the container.

Valerie, I get cramps in my toes when I do up up dog with my toes out behind me and tops of feet down. I like how Kelly Coffey says that some of the moves in stretches she does not do they way some do them as it doesn't feel right to her. She modifies it for herself. My shoes can stay new looking for a long time too. One pair of my Crossfit are black with white soles. I guess that is why I get grandchildren and my daughter asking if I got new shoes. I do clean them off after wearing them outside. My other pair is light blue and the fabric does tend to get a bit dirty even though I wear them pretty much exclusively for indoor workouts. I have put them in the washing machine a couple of times and let them air dry. I can read while riding in the car most of the time, but I have to hold the material up. Looking down at it will make me nauseous after a short time.

Lori, I would never get a workout in if I waited till late in the day. I suppose I could train myself to do it if I had to. I did in my younger days while doing daycare and my husband working the late 10 hour shifts. He had rotating shifts for a few years and I was always having to adjust my fitness schedule, with my children's things and my doing daycare. I managed though. The thought makes me tired and I now understand why I could eat near 3000 calories a day and not gain weight. I would gain big time now that things are slower. Yes, Yvette does move fast in most moves. From my understanding she slips cardio into most all of her cardio workouts. I asked someone if she does just weights at all. I don't like flinging heavy weights around quickly.
Are you still liking the air fryer? I noticed a magazine at Sprouts of air fryer recipes and seems the fitness health sites are all talking about air fryers now. I just want to replace my Ninja smoothie maker as this summer approaches before I buy many other kitchen things.
I have been doing a lot of reading on foot issues, especially the forefoot and it is suggested that problems occur because of too tight of shoes. Feet need space.

Deb, yes, I got my Superfeet from Amazon. I got the Carbon ones that says for athletic shoes and are light and thin with cushioning in the forefoot. The Superfeet site suggested the orange for forefoot cushioning, but I could only find them for men's shoes. Which I guess I could have went down a size and hoped they fit. Anyway, these cost almost as much as the shoes o_O But, then they are a major part of the comfort. These are yellow. I was looking at some that were called Flex Max or something like that. I got them today, but the shoes are arriving tomorrow. I have had so much joint pain the last few days and have been taking too much Advil. I ran out of some of my supplements and really need to get the curcumin replaced. I wish the supplements were as low cost as the Advil. It is better for the gut lining and body to use the supplements. I did sleep well the last two nights though. I guess between Advil and being outside some each day I slept better?

Carolyn, I have got new workouts to do and am still rather bored lately with my workouts. I do not feel excited about getting up and doing my workout. Usually when I get something new, I am anxious to go do it. Maybe Cathe's May rotation will be better.

I took pictures of Gertie so she would flee the middle of my workout space. She hates me taking pictures with my phone or camera or tablet. How she knows, I have no idea. The middle picture should be in third place in order as she is headed for the door. I am so pleased her hair is all back and she is back to normal again.

We are catching up on the rain we didn't get in march. dismal. I used to work out in the morning but these days I way prefer late afternoon. of course, I'm not working somewhere all day. I like 3:30 to 4:30 or so. I did Rev'ed up rumble again with premixes. tried the Calorie crush but that is too much jumping for me. so I did modifiers most of it, but it was not a good workout for me, so I went back to another premix and FF'd past the warm up and then did the rest. then did 6 pack abs, and the shoulder workout and some push ups. we had a car service appt at noon and I finally did the grocery shopping I hadn't done yet. it was a busy day but it works well for me to start dinner prep, start a workout, and do the rest of the workout while its in the oven. it also keeps me out of the kitchen so no snacking. DH often works out in the morning and we cant be in the room at the same time. NOT happening.

Diane sue Gertie looks a lot like Lori's Gigi. is she a chocolate lab too? I can't get the pics to blow up in size but that might be my limited photo program. it is postage stamp size.

My microwave is dying. the door open/close button broke and without duct tape it flies 10 feet every time the door is used. its 13 years old so not complaining. it works fine otherwise but no way to get the latch fixed. luckily I can still use it but didn't realize how important it was until it stopped working smoothly.

Good morning,

A busy day yesterday, lots of errands, part of which was purchasing a new microwave. Also sold our settee, which actually came with the house when we bought it. Taking up too much room, not comfortable, etc etc. So glad we were able to sell it. No one wants that style of furniture anymore. Actually sold it to a local restaurant owner for his wait area. The style ( antique Victorian) is what is restaurant décor is so if fit there. I have my Saab listed on Craig's List, and a Burberry trench coat on Ebay....hope those sell as easy as the settee. :)

Carolyn, I peeked over at the April rotation and it would not be one of my favorites either. Good you have that series to use instead.

Valerie, have never seen a moose, or anything bigger than a deer. Those we have all over, especially on the highways. Not fun. My agility trainer had one run right out of the ravine on the side of the highway when she was passing at about 75 mph, and it jumped right on to her windshield. Car was basically totaled, but her and her 3 dogs were not hurt. Peers at work that were in the FedEx Express division had to make many trips to Anchorage, and said that moose and other large animals were common to see on the roads all over, kind of like deer are here. Never thought about wetting shoes to stretch them. Our microwave is 21 years old...starting snapping and sparking for no reason....time to replace!

Diane Sue, That's really scary about what you found in your Ancient Nutrition stuff. I bought the other one, that is for Rest and Recovery. Maybe I should dig into that and see if there are any wood pieces...That is the same one I bought. Love the pics of Gertie! She sounds like how Kylee is with me. If I even move my Nook or iPad when I am sitting on the couch, she jumps up like I am going to go somewhere and she has to follow me. She sits at the bottom of the stairs when I go upstairs, no matter how many times, and waits there until I come down. I would have guessed it was the Advil that helped you sleep, but probably being outside was what it was. I took Ibuprofen last night, though it would help me sleep but it did not. I was still awake, tossing and turning at 1:30...( no link on Superfeet you bought)...

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Take care,

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EZ6YWUY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This is the link to the Super Feet that I purchased.

Deb, I did not take the Advil last night and I still had an hour and a half deep sleep and the same with rem sleep. Ancient Nutrition gave me a refund and a 15% discount on my next purchase. They also sent me a shipping label as they want to check out the collagen and they wanted me to put the wood pieces back in the container. My thought is maybe the wood came from a shipping crate with containers in it or something. I hope that your things sell quickly:) Dogs have such interesting personalities. :)

I ordered the Strawberry Lemonade Multi Collagen today. The one I was using the last couple of times was the joint and tissue multi collagen. I like the rest and recovery one as well. I checked out the Multi Collagen Gut health, but it had probiotics in it that can promote histamine so I did not order it. I need to purchase some more L glutamine. I take the Vitamin Code Vitamins 50 and wiser and they have gluthione in them which is what I use L glutamine for to help promote gluthione production. I had to reorder the vitamins today as well.

Diane Sue, you take curcumin in place of Advil? are they pills? Amazon?
Yes, they seem to help without the problems that ibuprophen causes. I buy the Meriva variety. Thorne is good Meriva 500-SF(soy free) is good. I have used Jarrow Meriva as well. For some reason it did not seem to work as well. Most recommendations is to make sure it is BC95 on the label. I did see another that was recommended by a functional medicine clinician that I found on Amazon at a decent price Vimerson Health Tumeric Curcumin that I may try, but it is not Meriva. I am always looking for good prices along with products that work.
Edited to say that the Vimerson Health recommendation is from Colin E Champ MD. AKA the Caveman Doctor. He has a website. I get his newsletters. He works for a Cancer facility and there is a lot of stuff on his site about Cancer and wellness. He also has a book called Misguided Medicine.

Valerie, Gertie is a black lab mix. Not sure what else she has. The vet just labeled her as lab when I first took her in. She just has a few things that make you think she may be a bit of something else. She is a little longer bodied than my daughter's chocolate lab and golden lab. I think her nose is just a bit different. But, it is hardly something that would be noticed.
My brother has hit more deer driving in Nebraska. He is blind in one eye and they come out on his blind side. He used to drive all over for Direct tv installing. Now he drives a truck for some company. So her is on the rode a lot.

Hi Everyone,

Tuesday I did Core Max 1, 4 DS KB Warm up and LiTe PHA 2. I didn't do any regular workouts from Fri-Mon so I felt very rested. All the walking and standing at work has been very beneficial for me, although I didn't think it would be at first. The first week or so I was sore from it, but now my legs and low back feel good. I am starting to think that I was sitting way too much before I started working again. Even with doing 1-2 hours of exercise almost every day, I was still spending too much time sitting in front of my computer. I am seriously thinking about getting an adjustable standing desk. We need to replace my desk anyway and were planning on doing that when we get new carpet for the office. I would never have thought that I was sitting too much if I hadn't seen how different I feel after standing and walking for 6-8 hours. Since the garden department is starting to get very busy, I will be working more hours for the next few weeks. I'm off today and tomorrow so it will be nice to have a break and be able to workout and do some other things. It's been cold and rainy the last couple of days but at least we didn't get any snow.

Deb-I'm sorry that your knee and hip are bothering you :( I agree about trying to get your knee x-rayed. Our primary care doctor is the same, trying to keep everything in their group. I think you should go to the orthopedic doctor.

Diane Sue-I've looked at Yvette Bachman's workouts and am afraid I would injure myself if I tried one. That's great that you did one. After reading Kelly's FB posts about taking turmeric I decided to try it again. I ordered the Doctor Danielle Turmeric Curcumin with Bioperine from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HK6FGIS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hopefully this one won't bother my stomach. If it does, I will probably give up on it.
I need to do Stacked Lower Body again. I loved it, but the last time I did it, my knee bothered me for a few days afterwards. Maybe too many lunges.

Carolyn-I received the 10 Pound Slimdown 20 minute workouts and they look really good. They will work well on days that I am working and don't feel like doing a longer workout. I think I will set up a rotation for the next 6 weeks or so using these workouts along with LiTe and KCM Build & Burn.

Valerie-I need to get in the habit of doing late afternoon workouts on work days. Back in the old days when I worked at the water company I did almost all of my weekday workouts right after work. My running groups met at 5 or 6 pm and if I wasn't running, I was cycling or going to the gym. The past few years I've been doing mostly morning workouts.

Lori-Great job with your workouts! I agree about Yvette's workouts, they don't look like they would have a fun factor at all. I've also learned that I need to move more slowly with weights or I will injure myself.
When I worked at the health food store I was able to do morning workouts since I usually didn't start work until noon or 1 pm. That was actually a perfect schedule for me. I may try to do something like that at HD, as they seem to need more help later in the day for spring/summer.
