...a good substitution for dead lifts? I can't do them because of a previous lower back injury.

I thought I'd give it a try yesterday with just 5 lbs. and it crippled me

Carrie -

Oh my gosh - this question couldn't have come at a better time for me. I've been doing BFL since the first of the year - and feeling strong. I was just starting week 9 yesterday -- I was kind of distracted, listening to music, while doing lower body work. I had 40 lb on my bar and doing dead lifts -- it felt soooo good. Then YANK - I felt my lower back go!!! ugh!!

I've been walking bent over -- and had ice on my back all day yesterday. :(

I guess, dead lifts aren't for me either!

Do you have any tips on what I should do for a fast recovery??

Thanks!
Michelle

I wish I knew of a quit recovery. I'm pretty sure just use ice for the first day or so and then apply heat as needed, along with over the counter pain meds. It usually takes about a week to heal, depending on the extent of pulling/tearing.

I really hope there are deadlift subs in the new STS videos, cause as of right now, I'm scared to death of hurting myself again.

If you lay face down on a bench and do "flies" that will work some of the muscles with the back bearing the weight.
