Default Starting BCP a week later than normal.

I have taken the same birth control pill for 16 years and have probably only missed one pill. I went to refill it and the pharmacy is out of stock and doesn't know when they will order it. They are going to call around to other pharmacies to see if they have it. I'm suppossed to start the new pack on Sunday (this was my period week) and if I can't get it filled until next week is it a big deal to skip a week and start the new pack on the 10th? Will my period keep going or start back up if I don't start the pills like normal?

Thanks,
Kim

I'd recommend calling your health care provider - sometimes they have a stock of samples that s/he could give you until your Rx gets filled.

Call your doctor. It's very likely they have samples on hand. I suggest keeping an extra pack on hand at all times for situations like these.

Good idea! Thanks. I called the pharmacy back and they said they found 1 Walgreens that had it. They said that particular brand and strength isn't very popular anymore so alot of the pharmacies don't carry very much of it or any at all. It's Loestrin Fe 1.5/30. Is it that rare?

You'll want to talk to your doctor about this, but I'm going to say No, you shouldn't do start a new pack after an extra week. By waiting an extra week, your own hormones will take over and you will very likely ovulate. You will have to wait until after your next period to start a new pack, and you'll need to use another form of birth control this entire cycle.

I would see if you can get your BCP at a different pharmacy or see if your doc has some samples, like someone else suggested.

The reason the pharmacies don't have it is becuase I'm pretty sure it's gone generic now, for about half the price. You may want to get your rx changed over to the generic to avoid this problem again.
