Default Menopause symptoms and probiotics

http://www.usprobiotics.org/

I believe after a year of trying to get my body straight after menopause I've found a wonder pill in probiotics. Many of you may not know that during perimenopause and menopause the PH balance of the vagina may be thrown off causing a woman to be more UTI and yeast infection prone. After 6 straight months of on and off yeast infections, I've finally found a solution through my pharmacy's menopause specialist. My obgyn never mentioned this as a solution!!!

Wanted to share with all of you.

This stuff also seems to be helping with my occasional IBS, too.

It is recommended that anytime antibotics are used, probiotics should be used also to replace the good bacteria. I believe this goes for children as well so discussing with a pediatrician may be beneficial.

These are purchased from Health Food stores or Health internet sites.

Candi thanks so much for mentioning this! They are also finding that doses of probiotics (eg acidophilus) given to infants tends to reduce colic. We all did a full course of probiotics in my family for 30 days - even my kids - and now do a supplement once a week to maintain the healthy bacteria. Of course as you said, if any of us ever needs a round of antibiotics, they repeat the full 30 days after the anti to up the good stuff again. Very good to know about it for those feminie issues though! Thanks.

I take acidophilus in the morning, eat yogurt (try to daily), and garlic at night.

I give my kids probiotics (especially after antibiotics) also.

I find it amazing that dr's don't recommend doing this. My sister's dd had an ear infection that would not go away. She asked the ped if she should give her probiotics after antibiotics. He told her that he gives pro to his kids after antibiotics, but it is not necessary....crazy huh?

Probiotics are also very helpful when you get sick. I went to a natural pracitioner and she said she always upped her probiotic dose to get more good stuff in her system to fight the bad stuff off. Sara, you are right about the ears. Be sure not to take probiotics with aniboitics, because the antibiotics will render the probiotics useless. Maybe a few hours after the dose.

When I went to the doctor to deal with a puncture wound last year (I sat on a pencil!) I asked about the timing of probiotics/acidophilus when taking antibiotics, and the stooge I talked to (admittedly a nurse practitioner and not an MD) didn't have any idea what I was talking about, and didn't bother to ask someone who might know!

I started using probiotics a few months ago. I can really feel and tell a difference. Glad to know someone else is getting some good results too.

Thanks for the info on the timing of using probiotics with antibiotics.

I've mentioned this to DD as GD used to be on antibiotics alot for ear infections. She would invariably get a mild yeast infection after taking the antibiotics.

This is all so interesting!

P.S. Kathryn, I knew you'd be on top of this :-)

A little far from the menopause idea, but I distinctly remember one of my kids who had been on antibiotics getting an absolutely horrible yeast infection all over his diaper area.

Doc did mention, though not until afterwards, that that is a typical reaction after taking antibiotics. Hmmmm . . .

Dontcha just love the hindsight out of someone who ought to know better? :o

Yep, my Dr. told me to keep eating my Activia yogurt when I was put on an antibiotic for a sinus infection. And I've been giving it to my dd (she loves it!) while she's on an antibiotic for an ear infection. Good stuff!

I've also taken a supplement called Florify (from melaleuca) that has the *good* flora in it for your intestines.

Another good brand is "Garden of Life". I started using using their probiotic supplements about 2-3 weeks ago and I have noticed a difference as well. I've also started making smoothies with organic kefir (it's not quite as thick as yogurt, I get plain) and organic honey, organic coconut oil, frozen organic berries nd a scoop of super seed-it is a natural whole food supplement, and a scoop of goat milk powder. Sounds gross but it really is good.
