It's a bird...oh it's a BIG bird!!!

Wierdest thing just happened. I was letting the wiener dogs in the house and out of the corner of my eye I see something quite large moving towards me. I look to my left and see a huge bird swooping down and it landed about twenty feet away from me. It was a hawk! I have feeders in the yard and love watching my birds but I've never had a visitor this large!! After looking in my bird book I've narrowed it down to a Cooper's Hawk or a Northern Goshawk.
Oh and they like to eat medium sized birds and small mammals...I'm hoping it didn't have it's eyes on my little weiner dogs and I interrupted it's attack

Probably not right ;-)

I'm betting it was a Sharpshined or a Coopers Hawk. Sharpies are notorious for raiding backyard birdfeeders. We have one stop by periodically. All the birds magically disappear when he shows up!

Be careful! We had large hawks in Salt Lake City that would sweep down and get our neighborhood cats, never can be too careful. But aren't they just magnificent creatures?

Wow, scary!! We live close to the mountains and the preserve, and I have seen a lot of Eagles, Hawks and Big Horned Owls. None of them has ever landed in my backyard though.

I have caught an owl going after my cat in my front yard though, I ran after it and shushed it away. I have lost quite a few cats to desert occupants like owls, eagles, hawks and coyotes though. One of the reasons why I won't get any more cats, having the doggies I cannot keep the cats inside due to the doggie door.

I do see hawks and eagles flying around every time I drive into our area, I think they are beautiful and majestic creatures but I don't like that they have been going after my kitties

Glad your wieners are okay!!! And I am glad it seems like you interrupted the attack!!

Ohhh they are amazing creatures aren't they? We name our wildlife, so the kids can remember them, and our resident hawk is Ethan R(our) Hawk. My kids have actually watched Ethan wait silently, then dart out of his hiding perch and catch a bird mid-flight. Fortunately my dog is a bit big for his liking. But I did catch him devouring a snake on the far side of our pond last summer. They are SO cool to watch! How neat that he landed that close to you!

We don't let our cats out at night, because we know there is a Great Horned Owl in the neighborhood. I understand they find cat brains a delicacy. I've heard Red Tail Hawks will take a cat too. If they can catch a cat, I'm certain they could catch a small dog.

Eek! I immediately thought of my step-mother, who would completely freak out if a huge bird came that close to her. She's got some fear of birds--she can hardly even stand it when seagulls swoop nearby when we're at the beach (yet she loves going to the beach).

How amazing! My sister has a Coopershawk that likes to feed at her bird feeder - on the Mourning Doves (is it Mourning or Morning?).

How neat! Hopefully the Hawk was just thier to raid your bird feeder!

We live on lake and see a few of the bigger birds alot! Not sure thier names but big crane's,beautiful blue/gray color and some Very pretty white ones! Hawks, brown with one black line of feathers on their wings and of course the ducks!

My Aunt lives up the street and always has a fear of one those hawks flying off with her small chiuaua

Eek, Beavs. I was just telling my Melty check-in yesterday about a nightmare I had with Big Bird working for the mafia beating people with baseball bats and eating their legs. I am still not comfy with Big Bird.
