Can anyone give me information?

Bobbi

Does anyone have experience with strength training after fracturing the larger of the two forearm bones, the distal radius. It required surgery and was repaired with a plate and six screws. I also dislocated the ulna. I am fearing seeing my atrophied little arm when the cast comes off. I am hoping I can get back to moderate to heavy strength work soon. I am a trifle scared but hopeful being that this is the most common fracture of said forearm when a clutz breaks her fall with an outstretched hand-and her face, chin, nose. I looked like a pugilist for weeks. I will be 45 next month so don't have youth to ensure my hasty recovery. If anyone has any advice, I would so appreciate it! I will discuss this with my doctor on 12/04 but thought I'd inquire to my favorite fitness fanatics, the educated crowd here in the forums. Everything has gone very well so far and I have followed doctor's orders to the T but I am just a little fearful and would love your advice, encouragement. Inactivity is making me crazy and the days have somehow gotten longer. What's up with that? The 4 Day Workouts will be here on Thursday and I think they will be perfect except I'll be starting with light weights. Please chime in if you have any words of wisdom for the woman who tripped over her dog, toppled down 7 steps onto a hard tile floor and discovered she is not ambidextrous. ;)

Oh Bobbi! What a mess! You poor thing! I don't have any professional advice to give - but I do remember how it was when I broke my arm as a teenager (forever ago...). Anyhow, when I got the cast off, it took a really long time just to get full mobility back. So my guess is that you'll probably need to just work on using the arm and hand again before you even think about using weights. Hang in there.

Bobbi, I'm so sorry to hear about what happened. Why not see a PT and have them guide you back to strength? There's another kind of specialist too, but I can't remember the name. My mom and all her friends rave about theirs. Phonetically I think it's called a FIZZ-I-A-TRIST, if I've got that right?

Thank you all! I am going to start with cardio and just use low weights, probably low reps. I know this surgery makes the wrist more stable. I fear pain but know now to err on the side of cation. PT is next on my list. I feel kind of excited, eager, impatient! :D I became very depressed right after my fall but there was a lesson to be learned and I do so tend to do that the hard way. I cannot wait for 2008. I am going to make it my year of becoming the most fit I have been since say, 15 years ago when I first became a fitness nut. dog walking has been my only means of exercise and before the surgery and the cast, I was very incapacitated and it was frightening. My family stepped up like champs though. I am truly blessed in that my children are amazing! The waiting is the hardest part as that song says. I can't believe I missed the creation of the $ Day Workouts. I won't miss then next ones. And I love you guys. You are wonderful!

Bobbi,

No experience with this, either, but just wanted to wish you a careful yet speedy-as-possible recovery!

This is just a note to add that Nancy's "FIZZ-I-A-TRIST" is a "physiatrist," in case you choose to see one. They are medical doctors (MDs)who specialise in physical medicine and rehabilitation - I guess it's a step up from a physical therapist.

Oh my gosh Bobbi! I am so sorry. I had no idea you were injured. I am amazed at your positive attitude and I just KNOW that '08 WILL be your year! I have no advice concerning exercise and this kind of injury-rehab. I just want you to know I am thinking of you and will say extra prayers for a speedy comeback and also for your '08 wish to come true. I am struggling right now with an injury too and it is not fun when battling the menopausal issues on top of it all! Uuugh! But, YOU give ME hope! Hang in there and let us know how your appointment goes. BIG, BIG hugs to a very special gal!
