Strengthening Gluteus Medius

Hi Cathe, I've been diagnosed with Illiotibial Band Syndrome and have a list of do's and don'ts from the doctor. I need to strengthen the gluteus medius but I'm not sure exactly which exercises do that. I'm guessing leg abduction? Squats and lunges are out for awhile, along with all cardio except a ski machine. I hope you can tell me which exercises I need to do.

Hi Linda! Yes, leg abduction would be the right exercise to strengthen the gluteus medius. But you may want to check with your doctor or rehab therapist for a list of specific exercises to do. This is usually provided on a sheet for you when you are continuing your rehab at home. Good luck!
