Hi Beth! I really don't promote doing wide or narrow squats as a way of targeting different muscles. I simply encourage each person to use a wide, neutral, or narrow stance based on what is comfortable to them. I choose to stand with a wider stance simply because it feels better on my lower back. However, I must say that since incorporating more core work into my workouts, I notice that doing normal stance squats (just slightly wider than shoulder distance) is much more comfortable for me now.
