Length of Barbell

Cathe, Is it important to have the right length barbell? I have one that measures only 3ft. (Walmart, the type you unscrew and slip on plates) I have seen things writtent that you should have one that is 4-5ft. Any reason this would make a difference? Thanks, Colleen

It would be hard to keep your hands far enough apart to do barbell chest presses with proper form. I think for most other uses, it wouldn't matter too much. I'm thinking here...
Squats, plie squats, dead lifts, dead rows, tricep barbell presses, ...hmmm, you might not have enough room for a shoulder press, but you might. Bicep curls, lunges, hmmm. It seems like all of those would be fine. Just the chest work.

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking about getting a new one or maybe sticking with the old. Would it be worth spending any more money on one? Maybe if I ever get to the point of lifting more than 40lbs! LOL!
