Question re: 1RM

Forgive me if this has been asked recently....

If one does not own a barbell set (sniff...sniff), how does the same/similar exercise with dumbells compare weight-wise? Is there a general rule? For example, if I determined my 1RM for standing dumbell curls, would I use the same weight (times 2) for barbell curls? Or is there a need to add or subtract. I realize that the hand position are different for each method.

I purchased a junior barbell set from Sears for $20. It has 2-5lb plates, 4-2.5 plates, and 2-1.25 lb plates. With the bar loaded it is around 25 lbs. I bought 2 more 5 lbs plates and am about to buy 2-10lbs plates for STS. It is smaller than a standard barbell, takes up much less room, is easier to handle, and is a good beginner set because I didn't want to spend a fortune.
