Good morning,

Dogs, Dogs and more Dogs!

The show went well yesterday, a couple of little issues, but hey with hundreds of dogs, things happen. :D.

Off again today, hopefully the show will be done by 1:00 or 2:00, then clean up, and take all the equipment back to the training hall. ugh.

We had such a nasty storm yesterday, trees fell on houses, flooding. The power actually went out in the arena for a couple of seconds...scary. It was amazing how the dogs just took it all in stride. At least we were inside, but the sound was unbelievable.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend, take care.

Hi Deb and any later posters--

This morning I did the 42 min. premix on KCM's Breaking Plateaus. I like this one better than the back-to-back of both workouts because you alternate the moves. I tried to add on some of the bonus moves, but they are mostly high impact, so I tried to do about 5 of them and gave up.

Deb, we didn't go out last night because of those fierce storms moving through. DH had to weight down his chicken shelters so they wouldn't blow away, and make sure his one group of really young chicks were inside the brooder. It wasn't as bad as they predicted, but we did get a very heavy downpour. Really weird: apparently NYC had 2 tornadoes.

Weather is beautiful here today. I'm treating myself to a movie--Beasts of the Southern Wild--that has received very positive reviews. I've been working so hard, but I finished talk 2 yesterday and deserve a break. One more talk to go, then I will really relax until time for the conference.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

I forget if In posted this but I did sts # 27 I think. I have some twinges in my right shoulder so glad I backed off on weight a little. this is the move ( cross body extensions) I suspect caused my shouldwer issues on one side. saturday was off day. sunday we did a 20 mile bike ride. it rained a little just as we were finishing the ride. we turned around sooner because it felt like ti was going to rain and that's not so great for riding fun. supposed to be measurable amounts tonight but then will clear off again. we are so dry, it will be lovely if it happens as predicted.

we don't get storms like that here. seldom get thunder or lightning except in the mountains. very different up a few thousand feet. usually not downpours either, just steady for hours ( or days). not very exciting but not usually worrisome either.

Lynda, I have that movie on my queue so let me know how it is.

we finished Downton Abbey the other day. really enjoyed it. it was from Masterpiece Theater. I never saw Upstairs Downstairs but am assuming it was somewhat similar, set in england right before WWI. such interesting interaction betwen royalty and servants.... such a strange system.

Deb, hope you get it all packed up and enjoy your holiday!

Hi Ladies,

Had a relaxing weekend, did not do much other than my workouts. My DD had to work, so no shopping for us.

My DB Juan passed away 22 year ago today, so it is a sad day for me and my family.
Not one day goes by without thinking of him. He would have been 54 in November.

I will be back later.

Josie

Hi everyone--

This morning I did the two workouts on KCM's Quick Fix back to back (44 min.). The first one is low impact, and she builds two short routines with TIFT-ing (that's taking it from the top Deb); the second is intervals and some of them are high impact, but she has a modifier. I would characterize this as Intermediate but Advanced if you do all of the impact.

To be honest, Valerie, I did not much like Beasts of the Southern Wilds. Very incoherent in terms of storytelling--you just never knew where you would be going next. The prehistoric aurochs that occasionally appear to Hush Puppy are symbolic, but of what, I couldn't say. The little girl Hush Puppy seems utterly lost and her father and his cohorts are always drunk. Sometimes she seems to love her father and at others she hates him. She talks to her dead mother occasionally and obviously misses her. I think the father is dying of sickle cell anemia, but even this wasn't clear. Every now and then I wondered if there was some kind of environmental message being conveyed because the little girl's imaginings include glaciers melting like those you see in An Inconvenient Truth, and she keeps saying something about how everything fits together in the world and wants to leave evidence for future beings that she existed, as if she is imagining her own extinction.

Josie, I know what you mean about certain days being set aside for remembrance. One of my sister's birthday was November 3 (she died at age 44), and another sister died on November 3, so I usually try to write something I remember about each of them in my journal that day.

Hope you are having a sleep-filled and delightful vacation, Deb.

Thanks for the review Lynda. that sounds uninteresting to me. will take it off the queue. I'm always leery of newspaper critics ... they seem to like some pretty strange movies. I put movies on the queue if they sound at all interesting and edit the list as movies become available, when I can read reviews by average viewers.

we were loading bikes for a ride yesterday and noticed the derailleur cable on mine was frayed down to a hair. No wonder I was having trouble shifting! took it back to the shop for a quick repair. looked at new bikes while we were there. we might do a major upgrade soon, and go from fairly cheap bikes to expensive bikes. so no workout yesterday.

vacation plans a little uncertain right now. the area we're going ( montana) is having fire problems. not the exact area, but everything is on high alert and smoke from existing fires might make it unpleasant. may need to change plans and go elsewhere.

Hi everyone who is not on vacation--

This morning I did the upper body premix on High Reps (39 min.).

Gosh, it really felt like fall this morning. Even a bit of frost on the roof.

Will someone please tell me why they keep playing the 9-11 footage on MSNBC??? I feel like they want to traumatize everyone all over again. I forgot that they do this every year, so I turned it on as I was getting ready to leave--and there it was, like it was happening again.

Valerie--I think Manohla Dargis in the NYTimes is usually pretty reliable, although she's also so picky that she likes very few films. I also pretty much trust Owen Gleiberman for EW, but not Lisa Schwarzbaum.

Starting the third lecture. I really cannot wait to have all of them done so I can relax for a bit.

the only thing I was hearing was criticism of the Today show for not recognizing 9/11 but doing a Kardashian interview instead. Haven't watched the morning news programs since they ended up not being about news. I really don't want to go through the whole remembering thing every year. enough. I realize people, especially in the northeast and NYC especially, may feel the need to honor the dead on this day but it's getting to be too much for me every year. I don't want to sound insensitive but feel "enough" now.

I read the movie reviews in the Seattle times and the Everett herald. more often agree with the herald guy. Netflix has a real mixed bag of opinions but actually are pretty informative.

Hi Valerie and anyone else who shows up--

Today I did the lower impact premix on Crossfire (56 min.).

Valerie, I have the first part of the series Homeland from netflix now. I stupidly didn't record the series when I should have. It really has had such good reviews. I would like to catch up on the first season before the second season begins the end of September, but probably will just have to record the new season.

Will someone tell that idiot down in Florida to stop inciting murderous riots against Americans by posting utterly idiotic videos on the internet? Whoever made that video should also be found and interrogated harshly. What are the motives of people like this? Their 15 minutes of fame? The excitement of seeing the ensuing mayhem?

Sorry for the rant, but I've been watching the news this morning and it just made me heartsick and depressed.

I do not know why people who should know better !!! don't act the part. ...I mean, this movie maker clearly KNEW what a movie like that would provoke... and maybe felt the resulting violence wouldn't affect him somehow?? a lot of blood on his hands for deaths of people who knew nothing of his questionable foolish motives. is this idea of free speech? the world is a smaller place ... and then the moron who dubbed it into arabic posted it to utube . I am disgusted. and I haven't even read the full stoy, just what was in the paper yesterday morning which was pretty sketchy.

Did a fabulous hike yesterday 7 hours probably 6 miles but pretty steep. lovely day.

the night before I did the next STs disk, #29 or something. I was following along doing my previous weights but getting ALL the reps whereas the last time I sometimes only got to 6 not 7. increased weight on barbell rows and deadlifts, by 10 lbs, a big jump but I felt I'd been soft pedaling those two moves.
I picked up a 25 to do one arm rows and as I did the 4th set I looked at the dumbbell and realized it was a 30. DH had set a mixed pair on the rack, I'd grabbed the wrong one. and I had weighted gloves. but I was doing them "OK". so I went to 25s on the flys for the first time too, after I surprised myself! it was such a shock to look down and realize I could lift more without a problem than I'd realized. I increased weight with the overhead presses slightly too and felt like I was maxed out. would be hard to rack the barbell if it was too heavy and no spotter. some sort of a giant leap for me and it was mostly an accident since I really thought I'd grabbed a 25.

Hi,

we;re back. We got in to town around 4:00 pm yesterday, picked up the dogs and got home around 5:30.

Nice trip, but a lot of driving for only 2 nights away. We really only had one full day there. Here is the cabin we stayed at looking at it from the river, which was only about 100 yards from the back of the cabin. Very relaxing.

Had my follow up mamo this morning, all was ok. Talk about scaring you to death. I think it was the tech that messed up last time, she was a little too fast, not thorough or something. Anyway, glad that's over.

Valerie, loved Downton Abbey, and cannot wait for season 3! All the flags in Deposit NY were flown at half mast on 9/11. DH and I at first thought someone in the town must have passed away, it didn't occur to us that it was because of 9/11. I have never seen that here, sad. Good job on the weight increase!

Garance, what is Homeland about?

Hi to Josie, & Joan,

will check back later.

Hi Valerie and anyone else who shows up--

This morning I did Gym Style back, sh, bis (50 min.).

Valerie, excellent on STS!! You are influencing me to go back and start it again. I did 25s for the first set of rows (12 reps), and then went down to 20s. But wow--30s! That's a real achievement.

We have had some great weather here too, but a little too dry. I hope we have some great fall foliage--that's when I really like hiking because it's so colorful.

I had to turn off the news this morning--too depressing. What people do in the name of their religion is sickening. Maybe I will turn into Christopher Hitchens. I think the title of his last book (he died last year) was God Is Not Great. Maybe I need to read something comical. I just finished Katherine Boo's book about life in a Mumbai slum and found that a real downer, too, although I would recommend it. Very compelling and eye-opening. I guess what bothered me the most was the corruption and the enormous gap between rich and poor--reminded me of what's happening here.

Ah well--5 pages done on my last talk. I just need to do a page a day.

Deb, will there be a season 3? I didn't see anything on netflix about another season. Love it if there was another coming but ?? glad you got some rest. looks like a nice quiet place. any fishing on the river?

Lynda, in meso 3 I'm only doing 7 reps down from 8 last week. I think ( I know) I would have looked at the dumbbells closer if I were doing 12 reps and probably noticed way sooner. I used 25's for 12 reps previously. as it was, I felt like I played a trick on myself. i realized that on some moves I can push harder and should.

I had some kind of breakthrough with weights and also at yoga. all of a sudden I did some things very well, and it felt very good. I have been putting in the time and trying hard and suddenly some things just 'clicked" for me. too hard to explain yoga poses here.... but at least three "Ah haa!!" moments in the last two classes, where the instructor had me hold a pose and had the others look at me as an example of proper form. all the weight training absolutely helps because I'm so much stronger than I used to be am firm and stable, and not shanky and hanging on by a thread. I am much stronger than most of the people in class and in some things it helps a LOT.

I sometimes wonder exactly what good religion does in the world. would things be worse or would they be better? or just different? the muslim population is so easily provoked into violence ... or at least a per centage of the devout are, that this could easily be foreseen. clearly it was intentional. such a shame decent hardworking people working for us.... paid the ultimate price for things they had no control over.

Good morning,

Vet appointment for Kylee this morning, then we'll see what the day brings. Love being off work, no pressure, time to think.

Valerie, yes, season 3 has already been filmed in England, Shirley Maclaine will be in it, as Cora's mother from the US. It should be on here in January I think.

Garance, did you read Fifty Shades of Grey? I just started it, and not sure what all the hoopla was about. Maybe when I get into it more.

Off to shower etc...will check back later.

good news on Downton Abbey.... they tied up a bunch of loose ends but certainly not everything so I will be looking forward to that. guess it will be a while though. wish I were better at remembering the character details. we watch so many series and some are hard to keep the details straight. Shirley Mclaine! that will be terrific ....
Glad to hear the mamm was OK. those are always stress producers until you get the 'all clear" letter.
need to get breakfaast and lunch going...will check back in shortly.

Not sure if I'll be checking in tomorrow. have a lot to do between now and then. camping trips are not without a lot of prep work. the places we go tend to be isolated and it's best to be well supplied before you leave. groceries in small towns are usually fairly pathetic, so I try to have most of what we need ( and enjoy) loaded when we leave. spending time grocery shopping is not a good use of time off either. not sure how long we'll be gone...depends on conditions and how much we are enjoying it. we think we will avoid the fire/smoke issues but that can change quickly and it doesn't look like the weather will be providing rain to improve the situation. we could even end up in the canadian rockies but right now... east of yellowstone.

we're hoping for some good fall color. too early here but the rockies are higher and have better color ..more deciduous trees than here. plus bugling elk, dueling bighorns.. love fall in the mountains.

http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8001180 this is a trip report ...(written by someone else).. on the place we hiked to on wed. it was busy the day we went too, so we did not go to the lookout but have been there many times. it is much bigger and more dramatic than these pics, but it gives you an idea. it's very hazy because of the smoke from forest fires in eastern WA.

Hi Deb and Valerie--

This morning I did the 47 min. premix on Cardio Supersets. I prefer this one to the low impact 39 min. workout on To the Max.

Welcome back, Deb! It sounds like you are more than ready for retirement. No, I have not read 50 Shades of Gray. I'm really not into bondage or soft porn. I read the reviews at Amazon, and figured I would probably be one of the people who criticized the quality of the writing in addition to just not getting it. I've been pretty frustrated on my reading lately. I couldn't get into Age of Miracles. Then I tried the new Irving novel and it bored me. I really hated Canada by Ford. I did like the Katherine Boo book on the Mumbai slum, but found it depressing. So now I'm trying the new Toni Morrison. Sigh! not sure yet. I haven't started watching Homeland yet, but I think it's about our secret service. Claire Danes plays an agent trying to find out something and she has her own problems. I will let you know what that something is once I start watching it.

Valerie, that looks like a beautiful area to explore. Enjoy!

Hi Ladies

I’m so happy it’s Friday. Today is a rest day, but tomorrow I will be doing a yoga class and the TRX class right after that. On Sunday I will be spinning.

Garance, I’m with you on the 50 shades of Gray. A few of my friends are raving about it, but when I read a few pages of the first book I was bored. I’m also not into that.

Deb, it looks like you had a good time on your mini-vacation.

Valerie, you vacation planning is like when my parents and all of my brothers and I used to go on vacation. My DM had to take all her pots and pan, food, condiments and other things. I do not consider that a vacation, too much planning.

Have a great weekend!

Josie

Good morning,

Only 2 more glorious days and then back to
overloaded.gif
.

Keegan's agility class this morning, then doing stuff around here. Made my spelt bread, and I need to make Keegan's treats some time this weekend, and probably food for him too.

I took Kylee to the vet yesterday, her regular check up, and to find out why she pukes every day, ( bile, not actual food). She has a digestive problem, that we hope does not get to pancreatitus ( sp). She also has pink eye. joy. The vet said because she is so young, it will probably get better with a different food, (low fat), and keeping something in her stomach, so we have to feed her in between, with treats or small amounts of her food so she doesn';t have an empty stomach. I sure can pick the dogs right?

Valerie, enjoy your trip! That place looks beautiful. I'm kind of with Josie regarding having to take food, plan etc. We took some stuff to the cabin this week, but didn;t end up eating any of it, except for the coffee of course. DH thought we would be cooking breakfast etc, but then wanted to go out to breakfast both days. We ended up tossing all the meat stuff because he didn;t turn the refrigerator up to where it would have kept things cold/frozen.

Garance, I'm not into that kind of stuff either, but with all the raving about it, I thought it might have some good story or something. Actually it's kind of boring and repetitive, not good writing, and it drags. I ended up starting a different book, and will probably not go back to it. Did you read One Good Dog"? It's by Susan Wilson, and the new one she has out "The Dog Who Danced" is pretty good. Very much for dog people. Kind of unrealistic, but entertaining.

Well, off to do some things around here before getting ready for class, have a great weekend.

guess I'll check in today anyway.
I do all the work because restaurant food does not agree with me and usually there are none close by anyway. I don't eat meat, fried anything, need a lot of fresh fruit and vegies. you can't get that in most places, especially in small towns. plus, it's WAY too much driving back and forth from where you want to hike in the morning to a bigger town with more restaurants. so I bite the bullet and do extensive prep and packing. takes me several days to do it all.

I 'm not reading anything in particular right now but will read a few non fictions DH just finished. something about teddy roosevelt and gifford pinchot.

Back in 1 week or ten days...everyone have a great weekend.
