******Purposeful CHINNING*****

Cathlete
Due to Catherines recent post on tips for pullups...I am chinning with a purpose now. If I do nothing else...I'm going to do my 3 days per week of 25 chins. Total 75 per week. Please keep me diligent Catherine.

The reason this article helped me SO much is that mentally I was trying to go to failure and he explained that going to failure is nice to do once in a while, but is generally overtraining when it comes to pullups. I CAN do sets of 5 and mentally I say to myself "I can do 5 - no problem" It's when I try to do sets of 8-12 that I become self-defeated. NOW, for others you will need to start at a different point and he explains where to start. For me...this was a big shot in the arm to motivate me to do chins again. THANK YOU CATHERINE. I have told others to use bands and he also is an advocate for bands. If you can't do sets of 5 - try the bands!!! They really are great. From what I gathered, it's better to do less on a daily basis than try for big sets once a week.

I just finished 5 sets of Pulls - shoulder width or a hair wider, 5 chins, 5 pulls, 5 chins and I'm headed back for the last set of 5 pulls. I'm pumped!!:7 :7 I love you Catherine.

Forgot to add - most importantly - remember to squeeze your glutes. I'm having a hard time concentrating on doing this while chinnin, but it seems to help take my mind off my sore arms/back and places it in another spot and DOES give an edge of strength. Just finished the last 5 pulls, total 25. I'm done.

Briee, glad you liked the article. I too find it interesting that going to failure is not a good thing. I have heard it before, but still insist on pushing myself. My goal is to do these three times per week or more if I can fit them in. I am actually thinking of getting the iron woody bands (?) to help when I need them. I can usually get sets of 5 too. Maybe I should add some ankle wt on and see what that does????

That squeezing the glutes thing totally threw me off. I am so busy thinking of my upper body, I was like what, squeeze what??? :+ I'll have to try it since you say it helps!!!

I want to spend a few weeks just doing the 5 sets of 5 and then I'll add weight. I've done that in the past and it's tough, but REALLY good to go to the next step. I've strapped on 20# and get one rep, sometimes 2. (I'm NOT ready for that right now!!). Edited to add...I'm probably going to be VERY sore just from doing these 25!!)

Briee

Awesome work Briee!! I don't think I'll be strapping on 20# any time soon :+ I was thinking 2 pound ankle weights :7

Just finished Kenpo X+ and I am officially done for the day.

Tomorrow is my pullup day. I hope I can get to 25. I think I'll be doing alot of singles. My pullup numbers suck x(

Hey gang!! I did 4ds double cardio this morning with pullups during the blasts. I only did a total of 10 pullups. I must confess that I jump up to the bar so on that first rep I have to be really careful to pause and not let the momentum from the jump assist me up. So I am really gonna work on my form. I did the squeeze the glutes thing and it does help. But it's just so hard to think about all of that whilst pulling up :+ Oh and my legs really love to go forward as I pullup. Must work on that too. I am still thinking about getting the iron woody bands to help with my pullups. Do any of you guys use those?

Hope you all are doing well!!!

Hi Joanne, Marcy and Catherine (and anyone else who may decide to have fun with the chinners today:7 ).

>the iron woody bands to help with my pullups.

You may like these for easier days, but Catherine your reps are high enough that you are probably beyond these. I think they are AWESOME trainers for someone who can't do one yet. I advise friends to buy walmart bands - purple, green, orange? and use them on the pullup bar the same way as the woodies. They are cheap and do the job! Make sure they have the clip end so you can loop it around the bar and clip it.

I just finished a mixer morning. Did SS and added in the pull up sets: 5 pulls, 5 chins, 5 pulls, 5 chins, 5 pulls, throughout the workout, usually after legs. I also added in S&H squats, 3 sets, with 94# bar. I'm tired - really in my neck - for some reason. I was not as sore after the sets of chin/pulls from the other day, as I thought I would be. I think I can handle this routine. Catherine - did ya do your 25 today?

I didn't get to go snowboarding today as 2 little ones are sick - so sad. If I can't snowboard....I want summer here NOW! (I'm loosing my positive winter spirit QUICK today)

Briee

Briee, awesome w/o!! Hope your neck is ok!!

My problem lies in my pullups. Yesterday I could only do sets of 2s and 1s. Chinups are much stronger. I guess I just need to keep working. I had really stopped doing pullups for a while and just focused on chins. So maybe adding them back in will help.

How's everyone else doing?

Hi All!

Had a bad night and didn't sleep well so I only did one round of Chest & Back and did SJP abs and planks. I did 2 wide front pullups, 2 chinups and 1 closed grip overhand pullup.

Catherine - Thanks so much for the article. I didn't get a chance to read the whole thing but it looks very informative.

Briee - WTG on all your chins/pulls!:) I didn't know squeezing the glutes helped with pullups. I'll have to try that.

Joanne - Anytime you want to get out of the cold, you can come down for a visit.

Marcy

>My problem lies in my pullups. Yesterday I could only do sets of 2s and 1s.

Sorry, sorry, sorry. I didn't catch that earlier. Okay...so I think the bands WOULD help you for the pullups - VERY much so. Sometimes even just a touch of help helps. Get those bands!! (but again, I find that the cheap ones work just as well - depends on your money situation and wonderful dh!!)

Thanks for the encouragement on chins guys - it's really helping. I've fallen away from chins/pulls for a while. Thankfully, muscles have memory!! It will come again!!

Sorry to hear you didn't sleep well Marcy. I HATE THAT. No energy for working out!!

Briee

Briee, thanks for giving me an excuse to spend more $$$ }( :+ My pullup numbers where better. But I was cheating a little too. We can't have that now can we ;)

Marcy, I am impressed that you worked out with no sleep. Way to go on those pullups and chinups!!

Oh Joanne, where are you honey??

>Briee, thanks for giving me an excuse to spend more $$$ }( :+

Speaking of spending more money....I now NEED to be able to move up incrementally with my weight (thanks to Cathe}(). I refuse to pay the cost for those platemate, pacemate things - WHY DO THEY COST SO MUCH! I'm looking for a way to do this for less money. I saw 1 pound wrist weights at the dollar store and am trying to come up with a way to stick them to my weights. Heavy duty velcro just popped into my brain. Anything else you can think of?

Joanne, where are you???

Catherine go ahead and cheat a little:7 :7 Sooooooooooooosan is not here to make sure you are beginning at a dead hang (although I wish she was!)

Briee

Briee, I love my platemates!! Yes, they are expensive, but I use them every wt workout. I even bought the donut ones for the bb too. ******MMMMMMMMMMM donuts :9*******

Thanks for the ok to cheat a little. I just need to keep on working on my pulls. I was at one time doing 1 set of 4 and a few sets of 3 on the pullups, but now I am pathetic :(

Oh forgot to say that I did heavy upper body followed by HIS cardio premix. Embarrased to say that I had to call DH- got pinned under my wt bench pressing. Had to call DH to come get the wt off. It was only 87.5#. I had been doing that wt with no problem. WTH?? OK the whining is done now LOL!!

Started the day off all wrong. Ms Muffie (poor baby) had an accident in the bed this morning. She hasn't done that since she was a pup :( Wonders if something is up. I know with bladder cancer you can have more infections, etc and wonders if that's it or if it's the cancer getting worse. Doesn't want to think too much about it, but doesn't want to ignore it either!
