My Slow and Heavy journey continues, slowly and heavily!

So today was Chest and Back. I used 30 and 35lb DBs for pullovers, 30lb DB for bench press flat, 25lb DB for bench press incline, 25lb DB for flat flyes, 20lb for incline flyes, 55lb BB for deadlifts, and 12-15lb DB for those weird bent over two arm rows (I really prefer regular one arm rows - I usually lift 30-35lb DB on those). I did those final push ups on my knees, and even then I wasn't sure I'd make it!

I think at times I was starting to have an out of body experience! I would sometimes get a little light headed on the 6th rep, but I would just have to focus and at times grunt. One time, I think I scared the pure living hell out of the pooch with my guttural scream! My throat still hurts! That was during the very last 35lb pullover - I just needed that extra oomph to get me through it. Bet Cathe wishes she could do that during her taping sessions sometimes!

I really like S and H, especially for chest. The first time I did it, it was like a light bulb went off and I finally understood how to activate my pectorals properly during flyes and how to "put my mind in the muscle". They are now saying that slow heavy counts don't really build the muscle as well as faster counts, but I change things up all the time and I think this is an excellent part of my workout repetoire. It sure shakes my muscles up and makes them quiver, that's for damned sure!

I used to do all three S and Hs in a single workout session, but now I am trying splits instead. It feels a little weird to have two parts of my body completely wiped out, two parts in DOMS from the day before and two parts totally fine, but I will probably get used to it. I understand that that is a better way of building muscle mass/strength, which is my immediate goal, so I expect to look like Arnie soon!

Yikes! Your workouts always blow me away! Since starting to workout again i'm focusing on lighter weights/higher reps and full body workouts. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hey, that works too! Different goals require different strategies. The slow and heavy series is low reps - I wouldn't be lifting that heavy for high reps! Jari Love regularly kills me with her Ripped workouts - high reps, lower weights. Of course, with my tendencies toward building muscle, I tend to start out with very heavy weights with her workouts and do down pyramids as my muscles fatigue. Talk about sweating! I love her pulses and holds. Brutality is a wonderful thing in a workout!
