A feline alarm clock ...

Posted 07-23-2008 at 04:22 PM by fitover40
has no snooze button.

My cat has some internal clock, how does she know it's 6 am? Every single morning, meow, to be fed. And her meow isn't just a little meow, it's a siamese meow. It goes right through you sometimes.

Anyway, it never fails at 6 am (give or take 10 min) there she is meowing to be fed. I haven't used an alarm clock in 19 yrs. First it was the babies that would wake me, then for the last 15 yrs, the cat!

There has only been 2 times that she hasn't woken us.

1. She lost her meow. Yes, you read that right, she lost her meow. I think what happened was she caught my DS's cold and her meower didn't work. It sounded sooooo cute, like a kitten. She was so adorable and pathetic at the same time. This lasted for a month, ah, a month of peace!

2. She must have sprained her ankle (whatever is an ankle in a cat). Remember, she is 15 yrs old. So she didn't walk or jump anywhere. We literally carried her around from place to place. This reprieve from the siamese alarm clock meow lasted 4 days.

Guess I better just pamper her in her old age and get up when she meows, it's useless trying to "snooze" her.

How do you "snooze" her anyway? Hmmm, I've tried shutting her in the closet (I feel too bad at that and have to get up to let her out), shutting her in the laundry room (she scratches too much), and this morning, just shutting the bedroom door (I can still hear her meow).

Hi FitOver40,

Your kitty is just beautiful! Enjoy your alarm clock every single day.

We lost our beloved 18 year old, 6 a.m. alarm clock kitty, Thomasina, in May. It is hard to get up in the morning without her and to see her empty chair first thing.

Cute kitty! I have cats and a dog and totally understand the animal alarm clock. Two of my kitties tag team...one makes biscuits on my bladder and the other meows. The dog uses a sweeter tactic - a big wet kiss!

It's always a challenge for the first few weeks when we "Fall back" - they start waking me up an hour too early!

Carolyn,
I'm sorry you lost your kitty. I know when the time comes for us we will really miss her meowing and yeowing like a siamese does.

Beechmil,
It's funny how they don't know when the time "falls back". I don't have any prob with my dog waking me because she can't jump up into the bed since she is older and has a bum leg after breaking it 5 yrs ago, but one thing that does wake me up with her is her tags jingling. It got so bad I made her a tag cover so they don't jingle. The groomer thought that was a cute idea. And on top of it it keeps her white bib from turning grey from the tags. Hope that makes sense.

We have 2 furry alarm clocks, too. I LOVE Siamese cats by the way! I didn't realize what nice cats they are until I was at someone's house and met their kitties. Anyway, we USED to have a furry alarm clock problem and now only occasionally on weekends do we have this problem.

By any chance, do you feed your cats as soon as you get up? If so, try making them wait a half hour or so. They'll learn they don't get fed as soon as you get up and they'll stop waking you up. DH heard this advice on a radio pet show so we tried it and it worked!
