Butts & Guts, But Mostly Butts

I've been frustrated lately by what I see as back sliding, especially in the butt & thigh area. (Butt sliding? Yes, it is.) The reality: I've been eating crap lately. Too many starchy & refined carbs. I know how my body reacts and I can't believe I need a reminder. But here I am. Got back on track over the weekend. Was doing fine today, until my run to The Coffee House. Day-old cookie. Chocolate & PB Chip. My favorite. Dang.
What's done is done, but think about this (pardon "us" for a moment
): You've been increasing both the number and intensity of your workouts and despite that, you're butt is getting bigger and it's getting harder to see the muscle beneath your thighs. You are slowly slipping back into "do I have enough butt-coverage?" mode. This has everything to do with your careless eating, and unless you clean up your act, all of the sessions of STS, B&G, DM, etc. won't make a bit of difference. Success is 80% diet, 10% training and 10% genetics. (Or 5% supplement and 5% genetics, depending on who you talk to.) You know this. You know all of this. So why are you sabotaging yourself?? Whatever the reason, it is time to STOP, and get back to work. Focus on how much better you feel when you eat clean. And think about how it carries over into your workouts. Do the cookies make you feel better? NO!! You feel worse. You know that. Now what are you going to do about it??.
Alrighty! Back to first person. In addition to eating clean yesterday, I opted for a legs/butt/abs workout. DOMs kicking in -
- so I must have done something right. Butts & Guts was up first. Got through the whole thing, but really struggled with the floor work. One pound ankle weights were not enough the last time through. Went with 2.5 lbs yesterday, and they are probably a bit too much. But that's what I have, so I'll just have to keep working on it. B&G is one of my all-time favorite Cathe workouts. I like the variety and always feel like I've worked thoroughly and at or near my limit when I'm done. I tend to want to skip the abs, so when I do get them done (like yesterday) I know I've accomplished something.
Did B&G with the "music off" option. I've found I'm able to concentrate better and don't miss the music at all. Even though my iPod is shuffling away in the background, I tend to tune it out. (Pardon the lame pun.)
About an hour after completing B&G, I did my first Cardio Coach premix on my treadmill. Need to refine it a bit. 10 second sprints just aren't worth it when it takes several seconds for the machine to come up to speed. Also, I forgot to include a steady state section before the first challenge. Putting together my own premixes should help me get in more HiiT sessions. I'm finding that I don't do very well with them when left on my own. I'm really looking forward to the HiiT workouts on STS Cardio. Although I like doing things like burpees, squat thrusts, etc., I need someone to push me. I would love to have the room to set up a course like Cathe did in Cathe TV #8. That looks like such fun!
Tonight is STS Disc #13, take two. DOMs from my butt down shouldn't be a problem. Feel just a bit sore from Disc#15, on Saturday, but not enough to skip a workout. And don't even think about dipping into the junk food!! It's chicken & broccoli for you, lady!!

I really like the CC sprint premixes running on the street, but I think they would be really frustrating on a machine.

Sprints on a treadmill are definitely not sprints in the true sense. There's just no way to get the 'zero to 60' feel. For me, sprints on my treadmill are defined as how fast I can go without feeling like I'm going to crash & burn at any second.
I would love to get outside & give it a go. Just not sure how well my knees & hips would fair. Might be able to use the track on campus. Hmmm. You've given me an idea. Thanks! |
