BUNS OF STEEL

BunsOptimized.jpg (5502 bytes) In 1987 Greg Smithey, an Alaskan aerobics instructor, made and started selling a fitness video called Buns of Steel. Today, most people have at least heard of this famous video, but in 1988 "Buns of Steel" only sold 114 videos!

Then, Howard Maier, a marketing consultant entered the picture. He purchased the rights to "Buns of Steel" for no money down and a promise to pay a 10% royalty on every video sold.

By 1993, Howard Maier had produced several more videos and sold over 10 million copies from the Buns of Steel collection. At one point in August of 1992, Buns of Steel held 9 out of the top 10 selling fitness videos according to Video-Scan. For the year, Buns of Steel accounted for 50% of all fitness videos sold and did more than $40 million in sales.

Time Warner purchased the Buns of Steel line from Howard Maier several years ago for a reported $20 million dollars plus future royalty payments.

TAE-BO

Tae-Bo has come from nowhere to become the best selling fitness video of all time. It has already grossed over $120 million dollars and is still the #1 selling fitness video on the market. Backed by  $2 million dollars per week in  infomercials and personal appearances on ER and Oprah, Billy Blanks and his Tae-Bo workout have taken the country by storm.

So what is next for Mr. Blanks, well Time magazine says he is gearing up to produce 24 more videos and he has just signed a reported book deal with Bantam for $1.5 million.
